Game of Thrones star Jack Gleeson hasn’t been seen for nearly six years since his days playing television’s most-hated villain, but the 27-year-old will soon be back on the small screen. According to a new report, Gleeson will be starring on the upcoming BBC comedy series Out Of Her Mind from comic Sara Pascoe. Juliet Stevenson, Cariad Lloyd, and rapper Scroobius Pip also star. No details have yet been revealed about Gleeson’s new character, but it’s safe to assume the role will be much less dastardly than the vile King Joffrey Lannister.
King Joffrey was a character Game of Thrones fans loved to hate, given the way he treated several fan favorite characters, including his own uncle, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). Perhaps just as memorable as the reign of the king on the series was how the story arc came to an end, as Joffrey by far had one of the most shocking death scenes of the show. Many other villains would come in the following seasons, but it doesn’t seem anyone was ever able to meet the same levels of hatred from fans as King Joffrey had in the earlier years.
Though Joffrey was Gleeson’s claim to fame, he had been working as an actor since he was a young child. When his Game of Thrones character was killed off in the beginning of the show’s fourth season in 2014. Joffrey’s demise would also bring about Gleeson’s exit from show business, as spending so many of his formative years working as an actor made him question if that’s the kind of life he really wanted. “I’ve been acting since age 8. I just stopped enjoying it as much as I used to,” Gleeson tells Entertainment Weekly. “When you make a living from something, it changes your relationship with it. It’s not like I hate it, it’s just not what I want to do.”
While Joffrey is certainly Gleeson’s biggest role, he also appeared in several movies in the years before. This includes playing a little boy in the films Reign of Fire and Batman Begins when he was a child actor, later appearing in the horror movie Shrooms and the drama A Shine of Rainbows. Although Gleeson virtually retired from movie and television acting after Game of Thrones, he has continued to work in theater, even bringing his puppet show Bears in Space to the United States in 2016. For those who can’t catch him live on stage, however, it will be interesting to see Gleeson back on television soon.
BBC describes Out Of Her Mind as a show that “subverts the traditional sitcom format by combining eccentric characters, animation, and scientific explanation.” An official premiere date for the series on the network has yet to be revealed. Perhaps many Thrones fans despised Joffrey with a passion when watching the HBO series, but that’s really just a testament to just how great of an actor Gleeson really is. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what’s next from the talented performer. This news comes to us from Entertainment Weekly.
