Jon Snow and Jaime Lannister return in a Game Of Thrones role-playing game, but The Game Awards trailer is very deceiving.
Game Of Thrones might seem like the perfect IP for a video game adaptation, but its track record so far has been mostly forgettable.
Telltale’s episodic, narrative-driven Game Of Thrones is probably the best of the various adaptations but it’s still not very good, even compared to just other Telltale games. Aside from that, there’s been plenty of mobile strategy spin-offs and a role-playing game in 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – but nothing that comes close to using the licence to its full potential.
A new Game Of Thrones game announced at The Game Awards is hoping to buck this dire trend, but despite what it looked like in the trailer it’s only a mobile game.
As rumoured earlier this year, Game Of Thrones: Kingsroad is an open world role-playing game set in Westeros. While it boasts an original story, it takes place during events of the TV show, specifically in the aftermath of the Red Wedding.
The game promises a ‘manual combat system’ with three different classes to choose from: a knight who uses a longsword, the Wildlings and Dothraki-inspired sellsword class equipped with two-handed axes, and assassins with dual daggers reminiscent of the Faceless Men.
Judging by the trailer, it looks like you’ll encounter characters from the TV show too, with Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, Cersei Lannister, and Varys all making an appearance (albeit without their original voices).
You play as the illegitimate but last remaining heir of House Tyre, a minor house from the remote wilds of the North, who has been summoned by the house’s leader, Marrok Tyre, to defend your ancestral home.
A note from the developer, Netmarble, reads: ‘In Game Of Thrones: Kingsroad, you will embark on a journey to restore your house’s legacy, forging alliances through trials and betrayals while navigating a realm rife with intrigue, danger, and opportunity.
‘The game’s original storyline expands on that of the legendary TV series, allowing you to forge your own path amidst the power struggles of noble houses and the looming threat of what lies beyond the Wall.’
While the trailer looks great, and exactly what fans have always been hoping for, the fact it’s only been announced for mobile will undoubtedly raise alarm bells – especially when there hasn’t ever been a proper console outing akin to the hugely successful Hogwarts Legacy.
Developer Netmarble have created many mobile games based on known IP, including several Marvel titles, Solo Leveling: Arise based on the anime, and Star Wars: Force Arena.
When will Game Of Thrones: Kingsroad be released?
Game Of Thrones: Kingsroad is set to be released on mobile in 2025, with a specific release date yet to be announced.
Mobile ports to consoles are rare so it’s unlikely in this case, especially as mobile licences are often separate deals and Netmarble may not have those rights.
