Because having a batch of Game Of Thrones prequel series already battling their way through development (with one at the pilot stage) wasn’t enough for HBO, the company has thrown another into the mix, with Deadline reporting that Colony writer Ryan Condal is at work on another alongside Thrones novelist George RR Martin.

The cable channel has yet to officially confirm anything, but Deadline has heard that it’ll be set 300 years before the events of the series and will chronicle the end of House Targaryen, AKA Daenerys’ ancestors. It’s apparently based on Martin’s book Fire And Blood, and includes the Civil War called the Dance of Dragons.

And intriguingly, this is not a completely new prequel, but instead a new take on the story that Thrones veteran writer/producer Bryan Cogman had been working on, but that he’d said wasn’t going forward last April. He’s since moved on to other TV fantasy territory, joining Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings series.

Whether or not this prequel actually makes it to screens is up to chance and quality. Meanwhile, Jane Goldman‘s series, set years before this latest announced show. The pilot for that, which features Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, Miranda Richardson and more, was shot this summer and a decision on its future has yet to be announced.
