Michael McElhatton can’t bring himself to watch Game of Thrones anymore due to negative reviews despite being a fan.

The Irish actor, 57, starred in the drama as Roose Bolton but he was killed off in season six after his son Ramsay stabbed him.

He continued to watch series seven but couldn’t sit through the final outing after the backlash.

He told the Daily Express: ‘I always watched them a little bit later, I absolutely loved them, but I wasn’t kind of chomping at the bit to see (the final episodes).

‘And then I guess – I will watch them one day, but it got such negative press, didn’t it? I mean, I just, I was really disappointed.’

On why the eighth season didn’t get a great reception, Michael theorised: ‘How can you be that big and that original and that new for eight seasons?’

The star explained that he thought show bosses would have been better to finish at seven seasons rather than carry on to the eighth.

He added that he understood HBO was under pressure to keep the show going in a bid to make as much money as possible.

Michael isn’t the only member of the cast not to be a fan of the final series.

Charles Dance, who played Tywin Lannister, was ‘underwhelmed’ while Natalia Tena (Osha the wildling) had more to say.

‘The calibre of writing towards the end and the plots and everything that happens and how they wrapped it up compared to any other season, any other bit, it just feels like it’s been written by different people,’ Natalie added.

‘It doesn’t make sense, for me.’
