Game Of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel has admitted that the show ‘could have done better’ in terms of diversity.
The Missandei actress opened up about how criticism of the show has been ‘fair’.
She acknowledged: ‘They really gave the characters of colour they did have some great stories and scenes to play [because] in the books, my character isn’t really prominent.’
Nathalie went on to say that she felt ‘really supported and looked after’ in her scenes with Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), however, diversity is ‘something that they could have done better on.’
‘Hopefully that criticism will be heeded for future shows of that magnitude,’ she explained to the Evening Standard.
It’s definitely not the first time the show has been criticised for its lack of diversity, with John Boyega previously saying it has ‘no black people’.
‘There are no black people in Game Of Thrones. You don’t see one black person in Lord Of The Rings. I ain’t paying money to always see one type of person on-screen,’ he told GQ.
‘You see different people from different backgrounds, different cultures, every day. Even if you’re racist, you have to live with that. We can ruffle up some feathers.’
However, the show has faced some criticism in recent weeks, after author George R R Martin slammed the ‘unfaithful’ final season.
‘It can be… traumatic,’ the creator of Westeros told Fast Company. ‘Because sometimes [the producers’] creative vision and your creative vision don’t match, and you get the famous creative differences thing — that leads to a lot of conflict.
‘The [final] series has been… not completely faithful. Otherwise, it would have to run another five seasons.
‘You get totally extraneous things like the studio or the network weighing in, and they have some particular thing that has nothing to do with story, but relates to “Well this character has a very high Q Rating so let’s give him a lot more stuff to do.”’
However, it didn’t stop the iconic show from scooping up 32 Emmy Awards while Peter Dinklage broke his own Emmy record to win Best Supporting Actor for a fourth time.
Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
