Even in the wake of the announcement that Game of Thrones will not premiere its final season until next year, the show continues to dominate the news. Earlier this week, the show which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in Best Drama lost to Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Regardless, it was a good night for Game of Thrones. Emilia Clarke  (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) seemed to have fun presenting at the ceremony and several of their fellow cast members were also in attendance, including Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Every GOT cast member attending wore black, along with the majority of the attendees, to show support for the organization, Time’s Up, which is attempting to combat sexual harassment.  Despite Game of Thrones’ loss at the Golden Globes on Sunday, HBO was doubtless pleased to learn the show has been nominated for two awards by the American Society of Cinematographers. Hopefully Thrones will get some well-deserved recognition there.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones Season Eight continues to progress. Actors returned from their Christmas breaks and began filming again earlier this week. The Dubrovnik Times announced the bittersweet news that Game of Thrones will film one final time  in the Croatian city before the end of the show. Dubrovnik has represented King’s Landing  for most of the duration of the show and it earned a special place in the hearts of fans, who have helped to increase the city’s reputation as a tourist attraction. The newspaper suggest GOT will be filming there some time in February and that Jon Snow may be a character featured there. Speaking of King’s Landing, back in Belfast a King’s Landing set is growing in a manner that suggests a battle will be taking place. Will Jon Snow have something to do with that? We will have to wait and see.

HBO continues to keep Game of Thrones‘ final season closely guarded– there have been little to no slip-ups regarding leaked plot-points this year, especially in contrast to Season Seven, which suffered from entire scenes being filmed by paparazzi from afar, pages and summaries of the script being leaked, and finally, multiple episodes being leaked. Unfortunately, Game of Thrones stars can’t be quite as secretive about their lives. One star made all the gossip rags recently, due to a (surprisingly minor, given the exaggerated headlines) incident in a bar. One can hope that we can find better ways to spend our time waiting for Game of Thrones than denying actors their privacy. I’d much rather someone crawl through shrubbery to secretly film a in-production scene of the show than chase an actor around while they try to enjoy their time off. Ah, well.

Hopefully more substantial news should trickle in soon! In the meantime, it’s a good time of the year to cuddle up in your furs, re-watch the show, and dream of spring.
