Filming on Game of Thrones season 8 begins in next month, and HBO is getting everything ready.
Of late, it’s had people laboring at the Winterfell set in Moneyglass, Northern Ireland. While the interiors for Winterfell (and pretty much everywhere else) are filmed at Titanic Studios in Belfast, the exteriors are filmed here, where pretty much any enterprising fan can see them. About a month ago, one fan saw that the front wall had been removed. Now, thanks to pictures taken by @alinaastark, we can see that a new one has gone up — either that, or the old ones have extensive remodeled.
We’re looking at the front gate of Winterfell here, flanked by two towers. In these pictures, we can still see some of the bare wood, but we can rest assured that it’ll all be covered up in faux-stonework before shooting begins.
So why did HBO feel the need to refurbish the outer parts of the Winterfell set so extensively? It could be because they took damage during the winter months. It’s the last season here, and HBO will want the sets to look their best. Or perhaps the Starks are fortifying their defenses in preparation for the army of the dead, which has now moved past the Wall. With the set out in the open like that, future updates are very possible.
