Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage has weighed in on the show’s controversial final season, which resulted in intense outrage from fans.
In 2019, the hit medieval fantasy series came to an end after eight years, in an episode that saw Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) killed by her lover and nephew Jon Snow (Kit Harington).
Peter, who played Tyrion Lannister on the HBO show, has reminded viewers to remember that the popular programme is purely fictional.
Speaking to The New York Times, the 52-year-old actor explained: ‘I think the reason there was some backlash about the ending is because they were angry at us for breaking up with them.
‘We were going off the air and they didn’t know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that.
‘They wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together. By the way, it’s fiction. There’s dragons in it. Move on,’ he concluded.
Although the dust has settled for some fans, Emilia also addressed the critical reaction to the finale in June this year, explaining that she felt very ‘protective’ of her character, Daenerys.
While the 34-year-old actress acknowledged that it would have been ‘utterly impossible’ to please everyone, she added that she understands where the anger from fans was coming from.
‘I get it. I get why people were p***ed. I totally get it,’ she told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
‘But me being the actor, you can’t do justice to the character that you’ve poured your blood, sweat and tears into for a decade without getting on the same page. Do you know what I mean? So like, I’m not going to be there being like, “Fine, I’ll do the scene, whatever. So p***ed.”’
Viewers were recently treated to the first look of the Game of Thrones studio tour, which will be opening its doors in February 2022
The multi-million themed attraction will feature the real-life sets, props, and costumes used in the hit drama, with an insight into how the Seven Kingdoms came to life.
Game of Thrones is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
