Game of Thrones fans won’t be getting the season eight rewrite they deserve as HBO has confirmed the petition demanding to start over with ‘competent’ writers has been rendered useless.
After waiting two years with the promise of the most spectacular TV event of all time, Game of Thrones tarnished its unbeatable legacy with a careless coffee cup and sneaky bottle of water.
From the unfathomably dull deaths of Jaime (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) to Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) sudden stroke of ‘madness’, which wasn’t really explained, the events of the fantasy epic’s final chapter were more than a disappointment – they were a betrayal to the millions who followed George RR Martin’s epic tale since Bran Stark was shoved out of a window.
Although, dwelling on it now is pointless as HBO president Casey Bloys has insisted that petition could amass 10 million signatures and we still won’t get justice.
The online campaign read: ‘David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.
‘This series deserves a final season that makes sense.’
Four months since Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) went off on her cruise, and Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) snuck up to take the Iron Throne, Bloys has addressed the backlash at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
‘There are very, very few downsides to having a hugely popular show,’ he told audiences.
‘But one I can think of is when you try to end it, many people have big opinions on how these characters’ stories should come to an end.’
He added reshooting the last six episodes was ‘not something we seriously considered’.
Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are yet to have their say on the criticism, despite being officially named as ‘bad writers’ on Google thanks to a final blow from fans, after dropping out of their scheduled appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con.
But regardless, Game of Thrones picked up 32 Emmy nods, which Bloys admitted is ‘certainly nice validation’.
Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
