Game of Thrones season 8 was the final series of HBO’s epic fantasy, and the finale saw us say goodbye to several characters, either with their deaths or as they set off for new ventures. Game of Thrones was unafraid to shock fans, with brutal murders and huge, dramatic battles. Whilst some are still reeling in the wake of the final episode, others have been questioning the plot holes left behind.

Warning: Below contains spoilers for season 8 of Game of Thrones

Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) perished at the hand of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), who overcame his love for her to see the danger she posed to the innocent residents of Westeros.

Jon Snow plunged a knife into her heart while embracing her, in dramatic scenes that sent fans into a frenzy this week.

Her murder saw Jon imprisoned by Grey Worm and the Unsullied, who demanded he be killed for murdering their Queen.

As the council of the Lords and Ladies of Westeros met, Jon’s fate was instead to join once more the Night’s Watch.

Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) then set out with the Unsullied on ships, giving the order to sail to the island of Naath.

Naath is west of the Basilisk Isles and northern Sothoryos, located east of the southernmost and largest of the Summer Isles, Jhala, and due south of the Valyrian peninsula.

The island is separated from Jhala and Valyria by large stretches of the Summer Sea

Whilst Grey Worm sailing to Naath is symbolic of his relationship with now dead Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), as it is the island of her birth, the voyage has been seen by many as a plot hole.

Fans took to social media to air their frustration, with one saying: “Is anyone gonna tell Grey Worm that he is gonna get killed by the butterflies in Naath? #GameOfThrones”

Another said: “Grey Worm just kind of forgot about the butterfly fever in Naath but the butterflies certainly haven’t forgot [sic] about them.”

And a third wrote: “I will never get over the fact that the unsullied are going to naath, an island with poisonous butterflies who kill outsiders”.

In the books, the island of Naath is a beautiful destination – but out of bounds for anyone who was not born there.

This is due to something known as butterfly fever, a fatal illness transmitted by local butterflies.

In the book The World of Ice & Fire, by George R R Martin, a large black-and-white variety with wings as big as a man’s hand, in particular, spreads the disease, according to Archmaester Ebrose.

Symptoms include a fever, followed by painful spasms that make the victims seem to be dancing wildly and uncontrollably.

In the last stage, those afflicted sweat blood, and their flesh falls from their bones.

Even though the Naathi themselves are immune to this sickness, all outsiders who remain too long on Naath fall prey to it.

Does this mean the end of Grey Worm and the Unsullied? Or does the sickness only exist in the books?

As the Game of Thrones TV series has now ended, it is likely we will never know.
