Season eight of HBO’s wildly popular fantasy series Game of Thrones was met with decidedly mixed responses from fans.
Many viewers felt the final instalment suffered from rushed storylines and several plot holes made the six episodes outright confusing to watch at points.
A whole year later, fans are still debating what exactly went wrong with showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss’ vision for the last season.
One of the series’ most epic moments should have occurred in episode three, The Long Night, in which Winterfell finally faces the dreaded Night King (played by Richard Brake).

All seems lost when the Night King raises the Winterfell defenders from the dead to form his army of undead wights.
However, it is Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) who eventually manages to deal the final blow, striking down the Night King with her Valyrian steel dagger.
In addition to letting down a large proportion of fans after years of build-up, perceptive viewers soon realised the episode contained a major contradiction with season seven.
Even though the Night King’s new army manages to break through their stone tombs, this completely goes against a pivotal moment in season seven.
Were it not for Jon’s actions, Winterfell wouldn’t have been prepared for the Night King’s impending onslaught when he arrived in season eight.
Unfortunately, in hindsight it makes no sense that the captured wight was unable to free itself from the wooden restraints, given their apparent strength in season eight.
This massive oversight clearly bothered many viewers, as several other fans took to discussion forums to debate this huge error in Game of Thrones’ final season.
Another fan said: “This part of the episode really p***ed me off. Everyone knows there are dead people in the crypts and they all know that the Night King can raise the dead, yet not a single person brought this to anyone’s attention?”
