The Game Of Thrones prequel has added Blackadder star Miranda Richardson to the cast.

Richardson has joined the currently untitled show as a series regular, say Variety.

The Harry Potter actor joins a cast that includes Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackle and Denise Gough.

The actress is a brilliant signing having been nominated for two Oscars. She received a nod for best supporting actress for Damage in 1993 and best actress for Tom & Viv in 1995.

She is best known for playing a stroppy Queen Elizabeth in the Rowan Atkinson historical comedy Blackadder.

The series has been created by A Song Of Ice And Fire author George RR Martin, and Jane Goldman who will also serve as showrunner.

The Game Of Thrones prequel is set 1000 years prior to the events of Game Of Thrones.

As HBO puts it, it will follow ‘the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.’

Meanwhile Game Of Thrones is just weeks away from its last ever season on HBO.

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently spoke about the show coming to an end, calling it a ‘rare gift’.

Benioff told Entertainment Weekly: ‘You have all these characters you love and you can come up with ideas for them, and a few months later these incredible actors will be saying those things. That’s such a rare gift.’

Weiss was equally emotional about Game of Thrones, as they wrapped up filming season eight.

‘If 10 years ago somebody had given me a chance to write a ticket, I wouldn’t have been crazy enough to write a ticket to something this great.’

He added: ‘After it’s done, it will be like re-entering some weird universe where I don’t even know how people act there anymore… When I’m 75 years old, I’m going to be [affecting a quivering, elderly voice], “You know, it would be great if Tyrion said… Ah, goddamn it!”’

Game Of Thrones returns 14 April on HBO.
