The Game Of Thrones prequel might take place thousands of years before the events of the main show, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any connections between the two.
With Game Of Thrones ending after season eight, all eyes are on the prequel, starring Naomi Watts, which recently expanded its cast.
The show will explore ‘the true origin of the White Walkers’, delve into the Stark family history and introduce viewers to ‘mysteries of the East’.
It’s the latter that has hooked one Game Of Thrones fan interest, as they’ve spotted a possible Game Of Thrones reference in the events that took place in the East of Westeros, known in the books as the Golden Empire of Yi Ti.
Fan phdknave pointed out on Reddit that the Yi Ti story is similar to the Night King and his Corpse Queen bringing about the Long Night.
They explained: ‘The Yi Ti had the last emperor of the Great Empire of the Dawn, the Bloodstone Emperor. His sister was the rightful empress and he had her murdered and declared himself emperor.
‘Then the stories say he took a “tiger-woman” to wife (literally supposed to be a half-tiger demon race), started torturing and enslaving his people, practicing necromancy, cannibalism, and began worshipping a strange black stone that fell from the sky.
‘This led to the Yi Ti goddess the Maiden-Made-of-Light to turn her back on the world, allowing the Lion of Night to usher in a dark age. As far as I’m aware, this happens right around the time of the first Long Night.’
So the prequelm set in the Age Of Heroes, and Game Of Thrones could be interconnected in this respect.
The full synopsis for the prequel reads: ‘Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.’
The Age Of Heroes era ushered in the Long Night, a deep, unforgiving winter that lasted a generation.
Just this week it was announced that Doctor Who and Strangers star John Simm had been cast in the prequel.
He is joined by Marquis Rodriguez (When They See Us), Richard McCabe (Wallander, The Duchess), John Heffernan (The Crown) and 13-year-old Dixie Egerickx (The Little Stranger).
Also on board are Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Toby Regbo and Miranda Richardson
Meanwhile the final season of Game Of Thrones is set to kick off in a matter of weeks.
Game Of Thrones airs 14 April on Sky Atlantic and HBO.
