The Game Of Thrones prequel has been given an official filming date, with HBO stating production will begin in ‘early summer’.

The as-of-yet untitled prequel series, rumoured to be called The Long Night, will star Naomi Watts and Poldark’s Josh Whitehouse in a show set thousands of years before the mainline show.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys confirmed the early summer production date – which will likely follow directly after Game Of Thrones season eight airs its finale.

Little is known about the prequel aside from it taking place in the Age Of Heroes, with an official synopsis reading: ‘Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age Of Heroes into its darkest hour.

‘And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.’

Others in the cast include Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo.

Game Of Thrones is set to kick off its eighth and final season on 21 April, with the spin-off show reportedly set to arrive in 2020 at the earliest.

Game Of Thrones season eight begins on 21 April on HBO and Sky Atlantic.
