House Of The Dragon has officially started production (PIcture: HBO)

Good news Game Of Thrones fans as the House Of The Dragon prequel has officially started production.

One week after pictures emerged from what appeared to be the set of the hotly-anticipated new HBO series, the show’s official Twitter page has confirmed that work on the show is underway.

Sharing a picture of the cast sat socially distanced for a read-through, the account posted: ‘Fire will reign. #HouseoftheDragon is officially in production.

‘Coming soon to @HBOMax in 2022.’

Subsequent tweets introduced the star-studded cast, including Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as The Sea Snake and Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen.

Matt Smith also made an appearance as Prince Daemon Targaryen, closely followed by Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.

House Of The Dragon is based centuries before the events of the original fantasy epic and will follow the reign of the Targaryen family, one of the main Royal houses that united the Seven Kingdoms later known as Westeros.

It’s the first of several spin-offs from the acclaimed show and is loosely based on George RR Martin’s novella Fire & Blood.

It was recently revealed that The Serpent star Fabien Frankel will portray Ser Criston Cole, who Martin described as only having ‘his honor and his skill with sword and lance’.

Game Of Thrones fans will have to sit tight for House Of The Dragon though as HBO revealed its being slated for release in 2022.

House Of The Dragon is set to arrive to HBO in 2022.
