Game Of Thrones bosses have confirmed that the show’s official prequel House Of The Dragon will begin production in 2021.
The welcome news was announced on the official Game Of Thrones Twitter page alongside two pieces of artwork of a red dragon.
‘Dragons are coming. #HouseoftheDragon begins production in 2021,’ the post read.
The highly-anticipated new series will focus on the Targaryen family centuries before the beloved HBO fantasy drama and it will feature Paddy Considine as King Viserys I.
According to Game Of Thrones mythology, the Targaryen clan are one of the former Royal houses who ruled an empire, and united the Seven Kingdoms together.
Often followed by three dragons, their family declaration is ‘fire and blood’ – and they often left both in their wake as they attempted to take over the kingdoms and eventually the walls outside Westeros.
But the thirst for power often saw members of the family descend into madness as their behaviour became more erratic and violent – and at most posts would end in their death.
House Of The Dragon will be adapted from the events in author George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood, which ends with a massive battle nicknamed The Dance of the Dragons.
As it currently stands, the synopsis for House Of The Dragon is being held firmly under lock and key.
Showrunner Ryan Condal, who is creating the prequel alongside Miguel Sapochnik, previously said the pair have ‘big shoes to fill’ given the weight and popularity of the fantasy franchise.
Speaking to YouTube’s Beyond The Trailer, Ryan refused to give anything new about the plot away but promised fans that the show means everything to him to get right.
He said: ‘There’s obviously tons of stuff that I could say, I feel like all of it would get me shot or fired!
‘I will say this. I realise the shoulders that I’m standing on here in making this show. I realise the footsteps that I’m walking in – they’re very deep, they’re very intimidating, but I come to the show as, not only a huge fan of the original series, but also a fan of the books.’
