If you, like us, are still tending to a Game of Thrones shaped hole in your heart, we have excellent news: HBO has officially confirmed the hit show’s upcoming prequel, House of the Dragon.

While rumours of multiple different prequels began circulating as early as 2018, House of the Dragon is the first of several reportedly in development that has been picked up for a full 10-episode series.

Centred around Deanery’s Targaryen ancestors, the network announced the news of the new show via Twitter, sharing an image of the House’s red three-headed dragon crest.
Per Deadline, the new series is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and will be based on on author George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, covering major battles like the Dance of Dragons (the Targaryen civil war) and the aftermath of the Doom of Valyria.

A synopsis of the story on Martin’s website reads:

“Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.”

It will also be partially directed by famed GoT director Miguel Sapochnik, who led some of the show’s biggest battle episodes including “Battle of the Bastards”, which one him an Emmy Award.

At this stage, House of the Dragon is set to debut in 2022, according to HBO programming president Casey Bloys.
In the mean time? We’ll just be over here, rewatching GoT in its entirety, and getting mad about the finale all over again.
