2026 has been off to a great start for Game of Thrones fans with the release of the prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which earned rave reviews from fans and critics alike. To add to that excitement, Page Six recently reported that a prequel movie is officially in development at Warner Bros., with Andor writer Beau Willimon tapped to pen the script.
Quick read:
- Beau Willimon is allegedly penning the Game of Thrones prequel film.
- The movie will reportedly chronicle Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros.
- A slew of other projects are in development with a few set to debut this year.
What will the Game of Thrones prequel film be about?
In their cover story profile of George R.R. Martin, The Hollywood Reporter teased a Game of Thrones prequel movie in the works at Warner Bros. According to the report, HBO and Warner Bros. were each developing their own distinct takes on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. At the time, it was also alleged that they aimed to make “a mammoth, Dune-sized feature film.”
On March 3, Page Six reported that Andor writer Beau Willimon has already submitted an initial draft of the film. The Warner Bros. management is allegedly happy with the script. For those uninitiated, Aegon I united six of the seven kingdoms, thus laying the foundations of the sprawling Targaryen dynasty.
A source familiar with the project told the outlet, “All of ‘Game of Thrones’ stems back to him, and you’ve never seen him on any of the shows.” However, given that Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. is underway, there is no certainty that the project will actually come to fruition.
Game of Thrones fans have a lot to look forward to
While the Aegon I movie is still in early development stages, fans have plenty other projects on the horizon. House of the Dragon season 3 will premiere in June 2026, with the confirmed date yet to be announced. Further, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is currently filming and aims for a 2027 release.
The Mad King, a prequel play, will have its world premiere England, this summer. It will debut at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. In late January 2026, Deadline reported that Quoc Dang Tran is allegedly penning a script for a Jon Snow and Arya Stark sequel. In the same article, the outlet also claimed that acclaimed animator Genndy Tartakosky is working on an Sea Snake project Nine Voyages.
