Writer Sara Hess, who’s worked on everything from Deadwood to House to multiple Game of Thrones prequel series, is moving on up.

Game of Thrones ended in May of 2019, but if HBO has its way, the franchise will live on for a long while. We’ve been hearing about lots of new spin-offs in the work lately, from an animated series to an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg and more.

But first up we have House of the Dragon, a prequel series about the Dance of the Dragons, the brutal Targaryen civil war that tore Westeros apart over 100 years before the main series. Word is that filming will start pretty soon under the supervision of Colony creator Ryan Condal and Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, who are serving as co-showrunners.

But unlike Game of Thrones, where most episodes were written by showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, House of the Dragon will have more of a traditional TV writer’s room, with folks like Colony writer Wes Tooke, playwright Claire Kiechel and George R.R. Martin’s former writing assistant Ti Mikkel all contributing.

The Hollywood Reporter has it that Sara Hess, a TV writer who got her start on HBO’s Deadwood before working on shows like House and Orange Is The New Black, is also part of the writing team. Interestingly, she was also a writer on Blood Moon, the Game of Thrones prequel show that HBO decided to pass on after it shot a pilot. I hadn’t realized that she’d made the jump to House of the Dragon, but here we are.

And it’s onward and upward from there. THR reports that Hess has signed a new two-year deal with HBO, among the richest for any writer at the network. In addition to her work on House of the Dragon, she’ll also help develop new projects for HBO.

They musth have seen something they liked. I wonder if she’ll be involved in any of the other Game of Thrones spin-offs, either the ones we’ve heard about or the ones we haven’t.

In the meantime, we can expect to see House of the Dragon in 2022.
