  1. Grind it down to the basics – Varys basically opposed and denied the rightful heir to the Iron Throne his position and extended the duration of the war, because he was in league with a priestess of the Red God. Looks like the realm wasn't all that mattered to him.

  2. The interesting thing about this scene is that it reveals, Varys has passions and motivations outside of "serving the realm". He's not just some cold, rational, servant of Kings. Why would a creature of pure logic, care about something as petty, as revenge on sorcerer half way across the world ? Which the main reason why am salty about D&D cutting out the Griff plot. It strongly hinted that all that Varys ever did (his scheming maneuvering etc.) all were done for more sentimental purposes.

  3. You see, this scene really makes me dislike the last three seasons. You see clearly that Varys hates magic. He tells you as much, he tells you why, and you see it in his face. He despises the arcane, the unexplained. So if that is the case, why is he so eager to aid Dany? The Mother of Dragons? You know? The very embodiment of magic, of the arcane in this world? And not just any magic, magic which can be used to reign death and destruction on thousands of innocents (the very type of people Varys claims to want to protect) at a time. If anything, Varys should despise Dany the most. She and her dragons, after all, are the embodiment of what he hates the most. Magic that has run amok. You really see how far the writing of the last three seasons has deteriorated . The writers have completely ruined Varys's character. This scene shows why Varys's book arc is so important, because in the book Varys is not a Targaryen loyalist, he is most likely a Blackfyre supporter, using the Targaryens as a justification for placing a Blackfyre on the throne. D&D really dropped the ball hard with Varys in Season 7, and even Seasons 5 and 6.

  4. The look of shocked realisation on Tyrion's face at the end when the crate opens and he realises just how powerful and influencial Varys is is great. Amazing acting by both Conleth and Peter in this scene.

  5. Where was this Varys in season 7? The type of man who grins as he traps his enemy to starve in a crate? Who plots and speaks of his immense influence? Instead we just get him making jokes with Tyrion and delivers a couple quick speeches on morality. What a waste of a character.
