BACKSTABBING and subterfuge are the bread and butter of Game of Thrones.

The Westeros fantasy drama saw countless twists and turns as rival houses vied for power, often tearing families apart.

One such betrayal came when Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) failed to keep Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) secret about his Targaryen lineage in the final season.

Sansa confided in Varris, one of he best connected advisers in the Seven Kingdoms, so suffice to say the news was bound to get out.

Sansa and Arya spoke to Jon about his ancestry in Winterfell, and while their intentions were good, Jon was gravely wounded.

In newly-released notes from the script, writers noted that Jon never managed to overcome the breach of trust.

Game of Thrones – Daenerys Targaryen gets her last dragon to burn Varys to death for backing Jon Snow’s claim to the Iron Throne

“Jon stands in front of Sansa. He hasn’t entirely forgiven her for betraying the oath he made her swear in the godswood,” the direction read.

“He knows she loves him. He knows she only wants what’s best for the North. But still…”

Jon’s family history ultimately drove a wedge between himself and love interest Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

Aside from exposing the sickening incestuous nature of their relationship, it also sparked a power grab, as Daenerys felt threatened by Jon’s legitimate claim to the throne.

Even though Jon repeatedly insisted he wasn’t interested in ruling as King, the damage was done, with Daenerys concluding she would purse the people’s fear rather than their love.

This culminated in the horrific burning of King’s Landing, during which the silver-haired leader torched civilians in the streets atop her dragon.

Jon subsequently made the heart-breaking decision to murder Daenerys for the greater good, after he sensed she was on a tyrannical and ruthless path.

Alas, the final season of Game of Thrones proved to be controversial, with many fans branding it ‘rushed’ and ‘oversimplified’.

Bran Stark ended up as king, while Sansa ruled over an independent north and Arya set sail west of Westeros to explore uncharted territory.
