Agreed Gwen. As much as I love the big action scenes of GoT, the plotting and scheming are very much as exciting. With that said, Lord Baelish is objectively the best schemer there is.
If he makes it past season 7, then it will be he has some other card to play. I can't see him making it past this upcoming season.
With White Walkers and horrible death coming, who would care to buy into his schemes. Ascension becomes secondary when facing existential crisis.
