About the people saying he's uncomfortable, i think he just doesn't feel comfortable with the way Ellie talks, looking in the eyes. Some people do that because they need a "mutual understading". It's like saying "remember that?" or "don't you agree with me?" all the time and it might be annoying sometimes.
