Dragons tend to know things no else does. They know there is something in Tyrion that interests them. If he is the Mad King's bastard son, then they know he has the blood of the dragon in his veins.

This scene proves Tyrion is a Targaryen, the Third Head of the Dragon and will be the rider of Viserion.
All the Dragon riders have had at least Valyrian blood. The Dragons can SMELL your blood type.
Targaryen blood is also Valyrian blood.
All three of Daeny's dragons know her BLOOD type.
Jon shares the same Targaryen blood as Daeny. All of her dragons will know Jon is related to Daeny.
This scene is a repeat of the scene in Season 5 when Daeny feed a master to her Dragons. She didn't speak to them. They were not starving. The Master simply walked slowly into the dark cellar with a torch … and was promptly burned and eaten.
The Dragons do not know Tyrion and are starving. The first dragon was about to burn Tyrion THEN suddenly stopped. The Dragon could be seen SMELLING or sniffing at Tyrion.
Tyrion is Daeny's bastard brother.
The Dragons knew Tyrion had the same blood(Targaryen) as Daeny.
Tyrion surviving had nothing to do with his speech(the Dragons only understand basic Valyrian words) and nothing to do with their intelligence.
Tyrion survived because the Dragons know the smell of Targaryen or Daeny's blood, and Tyrion has that blood.
I love how he is both terrified and mesmerized in this scene.

I know a lot of people want Tyrion to be a Targaryen but the Tyrion/Tywin relationship is one of the most fascinating ones in the series and having his father actually be Aerys would cheapen it, at least in my opinion.
