The battle in the latest episode showed exactly why this scene was so brilliant. It adds emotional weight to the big battle scenes. When we see Lannister soldiers get brutally slaughtered, we don’t enjoy it as much as we might have without this scene, because we now know that a lot of them are actually decent guys who are just following orders, and at the end of the day, they just want to get home to their families.
