Thanks everyone who informed me that the artist rendering at 14:18 is by professional concept artist Klaus Wittman in his redesign for the character Ciri in the game The Witcher. Here's his artist page if you want to see more of his work: https://www.artstation.com/klauswittmann
Can't decide if that armor is for Dany or for Ciri
In your last video you have mentioned the subtle changes in costume in the Stark children, especially Sansa and I have been thinking it might be also a representative thing. Especially Sansa can't display a more extravagant and luxurious costume now that they have to prepare for winter and save all their ressources. Michele Clapton saying she used cooler tones to show that winter has come has reinforced this theory in my opinion.
And thank you again for making these videos, they are so interesting and I keep learning new things and seeing details I have missed before. For example I haven't really payed attention to Dickon (my thoughts being "Oh sweet boy, you are so dead" – I was quite surprised!)
Most impressive work in this video. I loved the tie-in to the cave symbols. That shows that the production is tremendously meticulousin these things . I'm pleased to see you give call-outs to people who have inspired your analysis, even to a small degree. <3
Hi, love your channel, seriously. It's making me pay attention! For example, Gilly's dress has a tiny flower embroidered on the front. It looks like a gillyflower/carnation/clove-gilofre! Which makes me think maybe she embroidered it herself? They are heading to Winterfell, maybe she and Sansa will share a moment. Looking forward to your next video!
4:56 I love 15th century fashion
I commented your video on Dany about the Screenprism video. Now I see you were already aware of it.
An interesting bit geekiness here; the circle-line symbol on the cave and first scene of the series matches the Circle-pin broach design that is found everywhere in Westros. I may be reading too much into to itbut , as an in-world explanation, the broach once meant something as a reference to the Children of the Forest, but has long lost its meaning over the last 4 to 6 thousand years rather like, "There must always e a Stark in Winterfell', or the Stark words "Winter is coming". Or, more likely, it is simply the costume designer just really liking that broach style. Though it would be insane if this idea was shown as true.
Great vid as always.
love the video ive sent you pictures of my newest costume 😄
I just discovered your channel by accident and I love it!
Very informative and interesting:)
brienne's cape really was like barkcloth curtains
those dolls! so so great.
After doing some research I found out who the art shown in your video (14:18) is from. It's from a concept artist named klaus wittmann. It's a redesign for the character Ciri in the game The Witcher. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/VyRrg
I've actually pinned this myself as GOT fan art on pinterest, because someone stated it is art of Visenya Targaryen, but it looks like the original art has nothing to do with GOT.
Which costume do you think has been the worst in the show's history? I really didn't think Margaery's burrito dress was "queenly", and for the least flattering I have to go for Bronze Yohn Royce's armor. It really doesn't look good with his shoulders and chin. 🙁
I have to say that all of the black costumes this season is rather a disappointment, and a great deal of the costumes look the same. I would have loved to see Dany in purple with some black accents, given her violet eyes in the books and the fact that purple is the product of red, one of the colors of House Targaryen, and blue, the color Dang adopted as her signature color in Essos. Cersei, meanwhile, could be in some lovely crimson or burgundy dresses, with plenty of lovely armor to reflect her insecurities. While the direction of Sansa's clothing is befitting her character arc, I wish more of the lovely detail was visible to viewers and perhaps brightened up with some blues, light grey, or maybe even a little purple to reflect her position as the sister of the King in the North. I honestly hope though that if there are weddings this season they pull out all of the stops.
The swirl on Danis dress and the circle with the line in Sansa's necklace are both patters used by the children of the forest in their cave paintings and by the whytes in episode one.
Great breakdown. Only thing is Jaime has offered Bronn armor, but Bronn mentioned he fights and moves better without the weight of armor.
If you want to do another compilation video of a certain character, can I recommend perhaps Loras Tyrell? For the men of the show, he probably had the most interesting and diverse costumes.
It's funny how people complain about ill-fitting, or imperfect clothing designs. In a mediaeval setting, how often could courtiers actually ever get/have perfectly designed clothing?
I agree that Dany should have some dragonrider armor, not a dress, it looked so… I'm not sure, childish/reckless?
Cersei's dress reminded me of the greyscale disease. IDK if that was the costume designers intent.
I agree about Briennes cloak fabric looking out of place. But I LOVE the straps. The stitching looks hand done and it's kind of rough. Like she made it herself perhaps. Or bought a cheap one. It didn't look liek the quality of the ones Sansa makes for example. I think it fits her character as she is all about utility and not about frills and luxury. I would love to see her in something new but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Wow Sansas dress is amazing. Crazy how much the camera and filters obscure it's details in the show. This is now the second time she has added feathers to her wardrobe. Is the feathers a nod to little finger? I hope not. he creeps me out! Or is she adopting the feathers as her own sort of symbol, maybe a symbol for freedom? The Hound used to call Sansa "little bird". She was essentially a captive when she lived in kings landing and then again with ramsey, just like a caged bird. But now she is independent and has been making her own decisions. In past seasons Sansas style was heavilly influenced by the other women around her. She started of classic stark then started copying Cersei then later copied Margery. But now her look is her own. The neclakce the leather harness/corset and the feathers are all unique to her. I think she has found her stride and her clothes reflect that.
I read an article that contemplated if Dany wore the grey cape to symbolize her softening towards Jon since grey is a Stark color. I like that idea. Was it just me or was there some serious chemistry between those two? Not sure how I feel about that!
I like that Branns coat is different from the classic stark style cloaks. Because he isn't really himself anymore and therefore isn't really a stark anymore.
Girl, I live for your videos!
I loved the Stark children's costumes, it represents how far they've come, ironically enough, they've become what they wanted to become as children, Sansa looks like a powerful lady, Arya looks like a Warrior and Bran looks like a maester.
Cersei's dress looks like a throwback to early Bronn armour, showing how down and dirty she's getting?
Wow Sansa's cap has so many details! I admare of the craftsmanship and dedications, knowing the show won't be showing any of these details
Arya's hair style is also an obvious reference to Ned 🙂
My only real complaint about anyone's costume in the past episode was Arya's new costume. It looked like they bound her breasts. I get that they're trying to make the women more masculine, but that didn't look comfortable at all. Quite frankly, I'm tired of seeing the masculine dresses on every woman in Westeros besides Sansa.
It looked like most characters didn't even changed outfits since episode 1 of season 7. I know Cersei, Dany and Sansa and the othe characters changed costumes but all the costumes looked all the same with the clothes they previously worn, black and muted. I'm looking forward that Daenerys will wear red on the coming episodes or season rather.
I love the detail you give for each costume (even if it's not your favorite) and the history lessons attached. I also really like that you don't focus on just the female gowns, but instead go into all (the majority) of the costumes.
Also, you're the first person, I've seen, to bring up Sansa's 'Moon Door' Necklace recently and in relation to the cave drawing. I believe the creators called Sansa's necklace her 'Moon Door' necklace that or Michele Clapton did in an interview. While it's very interesting what it represents in the real world, it's curious that in the show's own world that symbol is directly tied in with the White Walkers, but there was no explanation of why Sansa was wearing that symbol. It honestly could've been a mistake or just representing the Moon Door , but it's interesting Sansa's necklace is different now as the plot is getting closer to the White Walker conflict and the big battle.
hi thanks for the video, this also was my favorite episode so far this season (I loved seeing Daenerys torch the Lannisters and Tarly army!). Ever since I first saw that black square patterned dress on Cersei, I couldn't wait to see your video and comments about it. Yes, Cersei's dress this episode was not my favorite, I did think the square pattern was interesting and I found it unusual that the dress had a mock turtleneck, I think this is the first time I have seen any woman on GOT with this style cut dress. What do you think the squares represent? Her rigid thinking?
Thanks for talking about the custom leather artisans D'alessio Galliano, I was very curious as to what type of fabric Cersei's dress was made out of.
Also, wow! those dolls by Kuzey are simply amazing! Great to see other peoples GOT art.
Hey, loved the new video. While I didn't particularly care for Cersei's new costume, I did like the reptilian texture of it, thought it gave her another cold edge since she's pretty much a poisonous snake, especially in how deep her fangs are in Jaime (for the Seven's sake, man, snap out of it!).
Also I designed 3 more GoT costumes. Was meaning to send them to you before today, but I was stuck trying to leave Norway and return home (long story short, lack of funds), and the stress made me forget. But it has been resolved, so I can send them to you now. They're a Sansa dress (I actually made 2 Sansa dresses, but didn't really love the 1st one so I don't know whether to send it), a Lady Tarly dress (in response to you hating the canon costumes – totally agree btw) and an Ellaria dress (as a last hoorah to the poor woman). Hope you like them.
And finally, I would like to HIGHLY recommend watching the show Outlander and making a video of the costumes cause they are so freaking great! Especially the first half of the second season. And it's really fascinating cause you have 3 different time periods to work with: mid -18th century, mid to late -1940s and late -1960s. I would love your opinion about them. You can find it on Netflix.
Wow! I've only recently found you and I have binged watched all your videos. I have never paid much attention to costume, aside from that beautiful or that looks great! You have given me a new appreciation for the cut, fabric and the Aesthetics of a costume, and how they so greatly impact characters. Thank you for your wonderful work and the new appreciation of this art form. appreciation .
Bronn once said that he doesn't wear armour so he can move around better, probably a good thing now, as he wasn't sinking to the bottom of the river like Jaime.
The first necklace with the bar just reminds me of those vintage plastic belt buckles, which makes me think maybe they had the idea for the necklace and used a belt buckle until they made the silver ring version for season 7. Also, that armor artwork is a concept art for Ciri from The Witcher 3 video game by Klaus Wittman I have seen that and wanted a type of armor like that for Dany. Loving the Stark looks this season!
Excellent content. Thank you for what you do and bringing attention to this artistry
Can you make something about Lucrezia Borgia from the Borgias?
Great video, I can't wait for the rest of the season. Thanks so much for answering my question! <3
I was thinking… maybe they have dany with the silver fabric as a nod to the stark colors? Dying to know what you think, because I have been wondering on it since I saw the episode 😊
I feel that bran's costume has some inspiration from maester (from the top part on the fitting). Kind of going to the direction of "All Knowing" like the maesters.
Michele Clapton is such a great source for insights! Thanks so much for the videos; I appreciate the way you bring fine & beautiful details into the bright light of YouTube. I'm here from Gemma's channel Secrets of the Citadel.
I really look forward to your video every week! It's so nice to see Sansa's dresses in the light. And I never thought of the connection between her necklace and that symbol either, that's so cool.
Very good and interesting!
The gray cape was to soften dany up to Jon because it's the stark color
How to source an artist (like for the fanart of Dany in armor): drag the artwork jpeg into the Google Images search bar, which will perform a reverse image search – this will show a bunch of links that the image is from, and scrolling through them should help you find the original artist/website. They're usually on the first page of results. Or, if you first find the image in Google Images itself, usually there's a link to "search by image".
And, great video, as always! <3
Good point about the saddle. Maybe Tyrion could design it, as he designed Bran's. In book 1, poor Danny's thighs ached after riding all day in a saddle with the Dothraki. I would think she'd have one made now that she is becoming a serious dragon rider.
Okay, i couldn't wait till the morning to comment! Who cares about sleep anyway!? Another insightful and entertaining video!! I really appreciate the background to Sansa's corset thing and it makes such great sense considering what she has experienced! Also, you really made me enjoy Bran's outfit as well, the show's lighting doesn't do it justice! (Love the lil shoutouts 😀 ).
I am so glad Cersei was last on this list!!!!!!!!! an unwelcome addition to her Gothic wardrobe……. and on a side-note, i really love how Tycho looks instantly synonymous with the looks of Braavos and reminds me completely of Arya's wardrobe whilst there and the braavosi people who were in the background.
Hi! I luhv your channel! Thanks for all you do. Just a suggestion… I am a big fan of Colleen Atwood ( I think that's her name.) Anyway, she did the costuming for "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "The Huntsman-Winter's War". Please consider doing a film about her and specifically those movies. Thank you so much!
