Are you ready? Remember, we’ve already warned you about spoilers.
Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen. And if that’s not enough, the episode also revealed that Jon Snow is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
What an episode.
We knew Snow was the son of Lyanna Stark and while there was speculation that Rhaegar was his father, it hadn’t been confirmed until now.
The finale made this revelation via Bran Stark.
Bran spills all of this juicy information to Samwell Tarly, with some Three-Eyed Raven visions showing he’s seen Rhaegar and Lyanna marry confirming Snow isn’t a bastard.
It is then revealed that Jon Snow’s real name is actually Aegon Targaryen, not Jon Snow.
Seriously.
Incidentally, that is the same name Rhaegar gave to his other son.
This all plays out while Jon Snow and Daenerys get jiggy on a boat – so basically it’s time to hit the incest gong.
Speculation over Jon’s parentage began when HBO confirmed that the title of the season finale would be called The Dragon And The Wolf last week.
It was widely believed that the title referenced Daenarys Targaryen – the Queen of Dragons – and Jon Snow, who is the bastard son of Lyanna Stark whose house sigil is the wolf, and their current battle to get Cersei Lannister to believe in the existence of white walkers.
But then the theory emerged that the dragon and wolf in question actually be Jon’s parents, Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark?
Recent reports have claimed that HBO cast an actor to play Rhaegar for several flash back scenes, but more importantly if the two are the dragon and wolf it would finally see the show delve into Jon’s lineage.
The most widely held belief in Westeros is that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna, raped her, and then she died, however events in a recent episode saw Sam Tarly reading old texts with Gilly leading to the revelation that Rhaegar had his marriage to Elia Martell annulled – meaning that all along Jon was not a bastard born from either the rape of his mother or a secret love affair, but instead their legitimate child.
If true, it would mean that Daenarys was in fact Jon’s aunt – and that he could now surpass Daenerys when it comes to the Iron Throne’s Targaryen successor, making him the next heir in line after the Mad King Aerys and Rhaegar’s deaths.
Another theory also suggested that Jon is the dragon and the wolf referenced in the title – he is after all the son of both a Targaryen and a Stark.
Rhaegar died before events in the series –but the brother of Daenerys has always had an important role to fulfil considering he is now the connecting tissue between the Mother Of Dragons and Jon Snow, leading to huge ramifications in the power-play of the show as it enters the eighth and final season.
Game Of Thrones season finale airs again on Sky Atlantic tonight at 9pm.
