It should come as no surprise that the new season of Game of Thrones has received high praise from critics. To that end, the show has been nominated for three Critics Choice Awards. Let’s see who made the cut.

First up, Game of Thrones itself is up for Best Drama Series, and it shares that honor with some very good shows.

  • American Gods (Starz)
  • The Crown (Netflix)
  • Game of Thrones (HBO)
  • The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
  • Stranger Things (Netflix)
  • This Is Us (NBC)

Next, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) snagged a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. I would consider Dinklage a main actor, but I’m no critic, and the show has so many characters that the actors are often relegated to supporting categories come awards season.

  • Bobby Cannavale – Mr. Robot (USA)
  • Asia Kate Dillon – Billions (Showtime)
  • Peter Dinklage – Game of Thrones (HBO)
  • David Harbour – Stranger Things (Netflix)
  • Delroy Lindo – The Good Fight (CBS All Access)
  • Michael McKean – Better Call Saul (AMC)

Meanwhile, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. If Clarke isn’t Best Actress material, I don’t know who is.

  • Gillian Anderson – American Gods (Starz)
  • Emilia Clarke – Game of Thrones (HBO)
  • Ann Dowd – The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
  • Cush Jumbo – The Good Fight (CBS All Access)
  • Margo Martindale – Sneaky Pete (Amazon)
  • Chrissy Metz – This Is Us (NBC)

Kit Harington: Awards pariah

So who actually did make the Best Actor list over Dinklage (or, for that matter, Kit Harington)? Behold:

  • Sterling K. Brown – This Is Us (NBC)
  • Paul Giamatti – Billions (Showtime)
  • Freddie Highmore – Bates Motel (A&E)
  • Ian McShane – American Gods (Starz)
  • Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul (AMC)
  • Liev Schreiber – Ray Donovan (Showtime)

Actors Sterling K. Brown, Paul Giamatti and Ian McShane all are part of ensemble casts, so what makes them Best Actors while Dinklage is Best Supporting? Emilia Clarke’s placement as Best Supporting Actress is even more perplexing considering the actresses who made the Best Actress list.

  • Caitriona Balfe – Outlander (Starz)
  • Christine Baranski – The Good Fight (CBS All Access)
  • Claire Foy – The Crown (Netflix)
  • Tatiana Maslany – Orphan Black (BBC America)
  • Elisabeth Moss – The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
  • Robin Wright – House of Cards (Netflix)

Actresses Caitriona Balfe, Claire Foy, and Elisabeth Moss are all part of ensemble casts, just like Clarke.

Oh, well. The Critics Choice Awards will be held on January 11, 2018, at 9:00 p.m. EST.
