The final season of Game of Thrones is headed our way in just a short few weeks, and the cast members are out there talking it up. In interviews with Movistar+, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Joe Dempsie (Gendry), Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), Jerome Flynn (Ser Bronn), Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau (Jaime), Maisie Williams (Arya), Sophie Turner (Sansa), Hannah Murray (Gilly), John-Bradley West (Samwell), Richard Dormer (Beric), Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos), Rory McCann (Hound), and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund) all had a little bit to say about a series that has forever changed their lives.
As we head into season 8, there is a lot of speculation about who will end up on the Iron Throne, with Daenerys as one of the leading contenders. Clarke talks about the character’s impact on the culture at large:
“I think you’ve got a woman who has sought and then inhabited a role of power, and I think that that, just in itself…from a social perspective, hasn’t been the norm for the progression of the 10 years the TV show has been playing for,” Clarke said. “The thing that…women would look to in that is a female that is unapologetically asking for power and being given it and dealing with it.”
Next, Clarke and other cast member talk about what it all means:
Going on a roll, Clarke has the most intriguing pull quote:
The fascinating thing about this final season is that we’re asking a very big question about power, and I think that this season has gone far and beyond who’s sitting on the throne. It’s bigger than that. The discussion, what we’re bringing to the table, is bigger than the throne.
Gotcha. Brace for importance.
I liked Anderson’s response when asked if Game of Thrones is all about war or if there’s room for love. “There is always time for love.” Awww. “In desperate times that’s when you most want to connect to the people you love.” We’re rooting for Missandei and Grey Worm to make it over here.
Meanwhile, Coster-Waldau and Flynn remind us that the showrunners gave each cast member a storyboard of their favorite scenes with their characters. Some cast members have shared what they got, while others haven’t because the scenes in question are yet to come. (Eeep!) Flynn got a storyboard of Bronn’s standoff with Drogon in “The Spoils of War,” while Coster-Waldau got one of Jaime’s hand getting chopped off.
As always, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams are adorable together. Seriously, they’re #friendship goals. Also as always, Liam Cunningham is a ball of energy, waxing frantic about the “ownership” each actor has over their character. “They protect them, they’re proud of them, they love playing them.” That’s the kind of passion and fire that will hopefully make this final season the best yet!
