Game of Thrones fans have been adamant that Bran Stark is The Night King, but now it looks like there’s actual confirmation from actor Isaac Hempstead Wright that we’ve all been barking up the wrong tree entirely.
In our defence, there’s been signs: from the remarkable resemblance between the teen and the leader of the dead army, to the fact Bran was the only Stark sibling missing from that season eight teaser in the Winterfell crypts.
Well, actually, even Isaac was baffled when he saw the Bran-less trailer and he’s stressed that his absence genuinely has nothing to do with The Night King. In fact, he really wishes you’d stop asking him that.
‘Whenever I post anything on Instagram I just have a barrage of comments going “Night King! Hello Night King! You are Night King! Hello the Night King!” he groaned to RadioTimes.com.
‘I mean, I suppose Bran is quite an interesting character to theorise over because of his whole link to time travel and whatnot. Because you can kind of get away with anything theory-wise and make it sound convincing if you’ve got time travel involved.’
He added: ‘I mean it’s quite an interesting theory, the Night King one. I just think it seems a bit obvious. A bit cheesy.’
We could speculate that Isaac’s doing a Kit Harington lying about Jon Snow’s death over and over again, but he’s pretty scathing about the whole thing.
As for that teaser, he chuckled: ‘Yeah, I don’t know what the fuck that’s about. I actually don’t know why I’m not in that.
‘We were looking at it and I was like, “Why am I not in this? All the other Starks are in it.” So I dunno – ask my agent. Get a look in there.’
So, who is The Night King? We’re still pretty clueless when it comes to the most terrifying villain on the box, but Vladimir Furdik, who stars as the ghostly swordsman, did reveal there’s a motive.
‘People will see he has a target he wants to kill and you will find out who that is,’ the Slovakian-born star told Entertainment Weekly.
Thankfully, there’s just one month to go until all will be revealed.
Game of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic and HBO on April 14.
