A deleted scene from Game Of Thrones season eight has given weight to a theory about Jon Snow and dragons.

The first episode of the final season saw Jon (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) take a spontaneous dragon flight to clear their heads.

HBO has released a behind-the-scenes look at the episode, which includes a blooper that’s very interesting.

Not because of Harington slipping on the ice and swearing – funny though it is – but the line of dialogue he says just before that happens.

In the scene where he and Daenerys walk in the snow together post-flight, Jon tells Dany: ‘You’ve completely ruined horses for me.’

Then in behind-the-scenes footage he adds: ‘It almost seemed like he knew where I wanted to go.’

We – and Jon – now know that Jon is in fact a Targaryen, the son of Dany’s brother Rhaegar Targaryen and Ned Stark’s sister Lyanna.

Dragons can respond to the the will of the Targaryen they are connected to, amd he fact Jon sensed the dragon could pick up on his thoughts should suggest to Dany that Jon is more than he seems.

Game Of Thrones co-creator David Benioff added more context in the featurette, saying: ‘Only Targaryens can ride dragons, and that should be a sign for Jon.

‘It’s a major thing for her when she sees they have some kind of connection to him. They allow him to be around them.’

Co-creator Dan Weiss said: ‘Seeing Jon and Danny on the dragons together – it’s a Jon and Dany moment, but it also seeds in the idea that these creatures will accept Jon Snow as one of their riders.’

The season eight premiere saw Sam Tarly drop the bombshell to Jon about his parentage. What he’s going to do with the information remains to be seen, but given that he and Dany are now lovers, it’s going to complicate things between them.

However Kit previously revealed that the Mother of Dragons does learn the truth eventually.

‘Jon is someone who plays by the book. He cannot lie,’ Kit told TV Insider.

‘Finding out about Dany would be very hard for him.’

Emilia added that her character’s feelings for Jon will make the new all the more devastating.

She said: ‘Daenerys’ life long dream has been to avenge her family and claim her rightful seat on the Iron Throne.

‘She truly loves Jon. Were she to find out about his title, it would cut deep.’

Game Of Thrones airs Sundays at 2am and Mondays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Seasons 1-7 are available on NOW TV.
