Game of Thrones season eight, episode three photos have been released ahead of Sunday and there’s something eerie going on with Sansa Stark.

In a photo still from the episode, which is expected to feature the biggest battle in the show’s history, Sansa (played by Sophie Turner) is seen sitting in what looks like the crypts beneath Winterfell.

The crypts are where those who can’t fight in the battle will be waiting while the violence goes on, although, they may not be safe down there either.

Sansa looks like she’s been crying and the outline of a face obscured by walls and darkness can just about be made out in the background.

So who could it be?

One pretty prominent fan theory doing the rounds is that Littlefinger aka Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen) isn’t actually dead and could be making his sinister return.

Or, a widely held belief is that the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) will raise the dead from the crypts, leaving Sansa and the others to come face to face with their dead ancestors, including her parents Ned (Sean Bean) and Catelyn (Michelle Fairley).

Other more plausible options suggest the may be someone non-threatening like Jon (Kit Harington) or Arya (Maisie Williams) but why would they lurk like that?

The series creators know full well just how dedicated Game of Thrones fans are so even a subtle detail like this will not go unnoticed.

Five other photos released tease the highly anticipated and possibly devastating instalment.

Jaime and Brienne brace for action (Picture: HBO)

One shows Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) and Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) leading the infantry preparing to battle.

Another features Jon in a blizzard looking overwhelmed with the glow of a fire behind him.

The next picture shows Jon and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) standing together on a hill overlooking Winterfell and their combined forces lined up in formation.

Hopefully Varys and Tyrion are ok in the crypts which are definitely safe (Picture: HBO)

Sansa features a second time but this time on the battlements where she looks at Arya with a mix of shock and fear on her face.

Lastly, Varys (Conleth Hill) and Tryion look stoic in the crypts, but there appears to be no background lurkers in this shot.

Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3 will air on Sunday and Monday on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
