Lord Varys (Conleth Hill) might have some tricks up his wide sleeves in the upcoming episode of Game Of Thrones season eight.

New pictures from the next episode shows some of the aftermath from the Battle of Winterfell.

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) is sporting a pretty nasty shiner after killing the Night King, while Jon Snow (Kit Harington) looks equally roughed up from the all fighting.

But while their battle with the undead might be over, there’s still a threat in the South to deal with as Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) is still plotting and Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk)is hanging around like a bad smell.

So plans need to be made, and one of the new images released by HBO shows some sort of war council in progress with Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Varys stood round a table with a map spread across it.

The markers scattered on the map appear to be clustered around King’s Landing – where they’re bringing the fight to next.

And Varys could be the mastermind behind it all, as the cluster of scrolls on the table in front of him suggest.

While he has been away from King’s Landing for some time, he might still have some spiders – spies – in the area who have been doing some digging.

The scrolls could be messages they have managed to send to him, which will help them cut Cersei and her forces down to size.

Hill previously hinted to TVLine that Varys still has connections in the area despite spending a great deal of time in Mereen.

The actor added that his character is ‘frightened’ of Cersei and wants to help stop her.

The episode four image is also interesting as Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) is nowhere to be seen, despite being the queen’s right hand.

Tyrion could just be out of shot on the other side of the table of course, or are we about to witness a divide in the ranks?

Other episode four images show the survivors paying tribute to those who died in the battle, which included Unsullied, Dothraki and men of the Night’s Watch.

Jon, Dany, Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson), Ser Jorah (Iain Glen), Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) then light the funeral pyres in tribute, with each person representing the communities of those who died in a poignant moment.

Game Of Thrones airs Mondays at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Seasons one to seven are available on NOW TV.
