Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen have been given the green light to go forth with their incestuous relationship in Game of Thrones ahead of season eight, so make of that what you will.

During the season seven finale, while two of the most beautiful residents of Westeros made love in a ship as they sailed to the North, viewers were told Jon was actually sleeping with his aunt, and Deanerys her nephew.

We’ve had 18 months to stew on that before Game of Thrones returns in April, but in the books of George RR Martin the couple have been given a hall pass because, while incest is still illegal in Westeros, which is good to know, Targaryens can basically get up to whatever they want.

During a fleeting moment in Fire & Blood, Stepton Alfyn confirms anyone born of Dragon blood can sleep with whichever family member they please.

Martin wrote: ‘One god made us all, Andals and Valyrians and First Men, but he did not make us all alike. He made the lion and the aurochs as well, both noble beasts, but certain gifts he gave to one and not the other, and the lion cannot live as an aurochs, nor an aurochs as a lion.

‘For you to bed your sister would be a grievous sin, ser… but you are not the blood of the dragon, no more than I am. What they do is what they have always done, and it is not for us to judge them.’

Surely we can judge just a little bit, right?

Showrunner D.B. Weiss recently opened up on the Game of Thrones meets The Jeremy Kyle Show storyline to TV Line.

‘From a dramatic standpoint, it makes things interesting,’ Weiss said. ‘Because the story is no longer about who Jon’s parents are. It’s about what happens when Jon finds out.’

Kit Harington, who admitted he was ‘sick’ of Game of Thrones by the time he’d wrapped up filming season eight, added: ‘Jon is someone who plays by the book. He cannot lie. Finding out about Dany would be very hard for him.’

As it would be for Daenerys, as Emilia Clarke explained: ‘Daenerys’s lifelong dream has been to avenge her family and claim her rightful seat on the Iron Throne.

‘She truly loves Jon. Were she to find out about his title, it would cut deep.’

Game of Thrones returns to HBO and Sky Atlantic in April 2018.
