Warning: Contains spoilers for Game Of Thrones season eight.
Game Of Thrones is set to notch up the death count significantly in the next episode, but someone’s demise may have been foreshadowed by Melisandre back in season seven.
If you’ll recall, there was an exchange between Varys (Conleth Hill) and Melisandre (Carice Van Houtem) at Dragonstone in season seven, with the latter scarpering away from Westeros to Volantis.
After hearing the news, Varys says: ‘Good. If you don’t mind my saying, I don’t think you should return to Westeros. I’m not sure you’d be safe here.’
In response, Melisandre says: ‘Oh I will return dear Spider, one last time. I have to die in this strange country, just like you.’
Interestingly, a teaser for the third episode in season eight shows Varys down in the crypts of Winterfell looking particularly troubled.
Why’s this significant? While the show tried to convince audiences the crypts are actually very, very safe, it seems all signs are pointing to the exact opposite – with everyone seemingly forgetting how the Night King can raise the dead.
So could Melisandre’s ominous words be about to play out? Varys is just one of many who could be facing the chop.
Carice Van Houtem also recently teased how Melisandre’s final bow in the show might go against expectations.
Speaking to the Huff Post, Carice said: ‘Ah, well, surprised. Every year I have no idea where my character ends up.
‘Yeah, I was surprised, in fact. In a good way.’
But will Melisandre’s true form make an appearance once again? We’re not ready for the nightmares again.
Game Of Thrones season eight continues on Sundays on HBO and Sky Atlantic. Seasons one to seven are available on NOW TV.
