The Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere is still months away, and we still don’t even know when in April the first episode will air. However, while we wait, we’re taking a look ahead and speculating at how the series could end for our favorite main characters. Will Daenerys end up on the Iron Throne? Or could there be another fate awaiting her?

Here are five possible endings we could see for Daenerys in Game of Thrones Season 8.

Should Daenerys end the series on the Iron Throne?

5. Daenerys Sits on the Iron Throne

Daenerys Targaryen wants the Iron Throne. That’s not a secret. Of course, it’s possible the series could end with no one setting on the throne at all (because they’re all dead), but assuming that doesn’t happen we wouldn’t be surprised to see Daenerys come out on top.

While “bittersweet” has been used to describe both the final season and the kind of ending that author George R.R. Martin likes, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Daenerys couldn’t still accomplish her goal. What if she ends up on the Iron Throne but loses something else — or someone else, perhaps Jon Snow, who has become important to her? What if she has to choose between him and the Throne, and she picks the latter?

4. Daenerys Lives But Doesn’t End up on the Throne

That could certainly be a “bittersweet” ending for Daenerys. With so many people vying for the Iron Throne, it’s not a guarantee she’ll come out on top.

Just consider Jon Snow. We now know he’s a Targaryen. In fact, he’s the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

3. Daenerys Dies as Part of the Azor Ahai Theory

According to the theory, Azor Ahai ended the Long Night by forging the Lightbringer sword by stabbing his wife’s heart. If Jon Snow turns out to be Azor Ahai, his and Daenerys’ relationship could very well mean her death.

2. Daenerys Dies in Some Other Way

The Azor Ahai theory doesn’t have to play a role in a tragic ending for Daenerys. Some fans think that the series simply can’t end with both Jon Snow and Daenerys alive.

“That would be too happy of an ending,” redditor u/J2thK writes. “And I think it’s clear that Jon is the main protagonist of the story. So he has to live. Which means it’s Dany who dies.”
