Game of Thrones matriarch Cersei Lannister (played by Lena Headey) has been clamouring for power ever since her first appearance on the show in season one.

And while she has succeeded through most of her time in recent years, she did let one important person slip through her fingers.

That person is, of course, Gendry (Joe Dempsie) – and was supposedly the secret son of King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy).

As viewers know, all of Cersei’s children were actually fathered by her twin brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolai Coster-Waldau), and were therefore not truly viable to claim the throne after Robert’s death.

However that doesn’t really matter anymore, as all of Cersei’s children have since been murdered, and the Queen has now taken over Westeros by force.

Fans have been pointing out Gendry has the best chance of taking the throne as the true-born heir to Robert – if Jon Snow (Kit Harington) isn’t interested, that is.

But the passionate fans at winteriscoming.net have another theory about Gendry which could change his position in the Game of Thrones.

They recently reminded readers about season one’s touching moment with Cersei where she described her first child, a “black-haired beauty” who died after birth.

The site went on to say: “This scene marks a rare moment of tenderness for Cersei.

“She displays all the appearances of grief and gives us no reason to doubt that she had a son with King Robert, and that he [the son] died.”

The site went on to theorise that Robert and Cersei’s continuously aggressive relationship may have made the Queen nervous about the birth of Robert’s first-born son.

And that, because of this, she may have made secret arrangements to move Gendry out of the throne’s clutches without Robert knowing.

This would coincide with the surprising turn of events when Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) endeavoured to kill all of Robert’s secret children.

During this conquest Gendry was sent away in secret – again – and somehow managed to make it out of the city unharmed.

Could he have been secretly saved by Cersei who wanted to protect her first-born?

Meanwhile earlier today Jon actor Kit arrived on BBC Radio 2 to discuss the show’s finale.

On whether he was satisfied with the show’s ending Kit responded: “That’s a very good question.

“I was sort of… It’s weird walking around with this big kind of secret, we know how it wraps up and how it ends.

“When you finish a book, you’re not happy it’s over – you don’t finish a book and think, ‘I’m happy it’s over.’ “You have this grief it’s over and that’s how it was with this nine-year show. There’s always this loss around it.”

Game of Thrones season 8 will return to HBO and Sky Atlantic on April 14. Seasons 1-7 are currently streaming on NOW TV.
