Game of Thrones season eight was meant to be three films, according to the show’s creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
It’s been revealed by showrunners that the ending of the fantasy series was originally intended to be made into three separate two-hour long movies, with the idea pitched way back in 2012.
Bosses believed that turning the final episodes into films could have helped with the budget they needed to end the story true to the magnificent scale writer George R. R. Martin described; however, these plans were later shelved when the series grew into one of the biggest franchises going.
Game of Thrones’ popularity helped David and Dan convince HBO to grant the last six episodes a budget of more than $15 million (£11.5 million) and with the big bucks on their side, the movies weren’t needed.
Talking about the upcoming finale, Dan told Entertainment Weekly: ‘It’s what we’re working towards in a perfect world.
‘We end up with an epic fantasy story but with the level of familiarity and investment in the characters that are normally impossible in a two-hour movie.’
While an air date for the hotly-anticipated final series is yet to be announced, spoilers have been coming in thick and fast – so look away now if you want to be kept in the dark.
Details from the first episode have emerged and teases a potential rift between Sansa and Jon Snow and it looks like they’ll clash very early on.
Entertainment Weekly revealed that scenes will begin at Winterfell and the episode contains ‘plenty of callbacks’ to the show’s very first episode, throwing viewers back to 2011.
They said: ‘Instead of King Robert’s procession arriving, it’s Daenerys and her army.
‘What follows is a thrilling and tense intermingling of characters – some of whom have never previously met, many who have messy histories – as they all prepare to face the inevitable invasion of the Army of the Dead.’
Reports added: ‘They also provide a tease about Sansa and Jon Snow’s relationship in the premiere, writing: ‘Sansa isn’t thrilled that Jon bent the knee to his fancy new Targaryen girlfriend, at least not at first.’
Meanwhile, the first picture to come from the final chapter appeared just yesterday and showed Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen cosy up to one another as they gear up for winter in Westeros.
We are READY.
The final series of Game of Thrones is set to air on HBO next year.
