Petyr Baylish, also known as Littlefinger, (played by Aidan Gillen) was one Game of Thrones’ most conniving and manipulative villains.
The unpredictable character attached himself to Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) during the latter half of his story, still clinging on to his unrequited never-ending love for the late Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley).
But when Sansa’s younger sister Arya (Maisie Williams) returned to Winterfell – completely different to the child she once knew – everything was different.
In the end, Sansa and Arya teamed up to take down Littlefinger in one of the most explosive scenes of season seven of the HBO fantasy.
Despite that, it hasn’t stopped actor Aidan from giving his own thoughts and sharing tidbits on what’s to come for the final six episodes next year.
Speaking in an interview, the Irish Peaky Blinders star hinted at a very dramatic ending to the series.
“I always thought it’d be nice for it to have a happy ending,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “But I can’t imagine that would be appropriate.”
While the actor was speaking from experience, he went on to say he “honestly doesn’t know” how George R.R. Martin’s novels’ adaptation will conclude.
Could one of the Stark sisters end up on the highly-coveted throne? Or will it be favourite Jon Snow (Kit Harington) instead?
Insisting he’s not bitter about his character’s death in the season seven finale, Aidan continued: “It’s a great thing. I’ll be excited to watch it as an audience member.”
He then joked that he’ll sometimes slip into Littlefinger’s costume for fun, before noting: “[Hopefully], it’s something unexpected.”
Aidan also shared how he’d known for a while Littlefinger wouldn’t make it to the end of the series, which has seen a huge number of violent deaths over the course of its seven series.
“If you couldn’t see that coming…” he joked, and said strangely there was actually a consensus on-set between the remaining cast about the writers and showrunners.
He said they all believed “even [the bosses] didn’t know” how the show would finish.
“There were stories about George R.R. Martin leaving secrets in vaults with combinations and all of that,” Aidan explained. “I know it adds to the allure.”
“The fact that so many people have so many expectations hinging on it and so many people are interested, it’s this huge global storytelling phenomenon.”
“It’s pretty fascinating,” the star said finally. “The fact that I was actually part of it for a number of years is kind of mind-blowing.
“A big player in George Martin’s fantastic world,” Aidan added with a bittersweet note.
Game of Thrones season eight concludes next year on HBO.
