Game of Thrones fans have been promised the biggest battle on film or television ever in season eight, and now we know exactly when that bloodbath will take place.
And the news comes from an unlikely source in The Night King star Vladimir Furdik, who will be taking centre stage leading the army of the dead in the war against the living in episode three – not the penultimate episode, potentially leaving space for another huge battle, according to tradition of the past seven chapters.
According to an interview with Hungarian publication Sorozat Wiki, Furdik revealed: ‘In the third part of the last season, there is a battle that the creators intend to be the biggest in television history.
‘Almost the full episode will be about the battle, it will take about an hour.’
The scene in question took a staggering 55 days to film and has been the source of much speculation as the only real confirmation of anything we have going into season eight.
But forget the size, what matters, according to Furdik, is that director Miguel Sapochnik keeps it interesting.
‘Having the largest battle doesn’t sound very exciting — it actually sounds pretty boring,’ Furdik added. ‘Part of our challenge, and really, Miguel’s challenge, is how to keep that compelling… we’ve been building toward this since the very beginning.
‘It’s the living against the dead, and you can’t do that in a 12-minute sequence.’
Furdik’s revelations comes after fans have begun speculating that The Night King and his White Walkers may actually turn out to be a force for good after all.
Game of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic and HBO in 2019.
