Game Of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik revealed a battle scene involving 50 direwolves was dropped from season eight.
The unique beasts would have had their own part to play in the hit show’s last ever season.
Sapochnik explained the sequence would take place in the episode The Long Night, the third episode of season eight where the remaining characters went to war against the Night King and his army of the dead.
The director said the creatures, of which the Stark children had one each, would have got together to attack the Night’s King’s dragon.
However, the idea was binned as he thought it would be boring to watch.
He said: ‘There were many things that happened, that people would have been so happy to have happen. Attack of dire wolves and crazy stuff.
‘At some point you’re like, 50 direwolves attacking an undead dragon does not a good movie make.’
There would have also been an extended fight sequence where viewers would have seen the Night King’s impressive skills, but this was also dropped.
The director also revealed that he wanted to be ruthless when it came to killing characters off, but was shut down by creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
Sapochnik explained to Indiewire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast: ‘The 17-minute opening it has is because I didn’t want to have a battle. It was just me trying to hold off as long as f*****g possible. Once we lose the audience, we’ve lost the audience.
‘There was the fear of it feeling like a remix of every battle we’ve done.
‘I wanted to kill everyone. I wanted to kill Jorah (Iain Glen) in the horse charge at the beginning.
‘I wanted it to be ruthless so that in the first 10 minutes you say all bets are off, anyone can die. And David and Dan didn’t want to. They were saving it for The Bells, kind of.’
Despite the best intentions of everyone involved in the HBO show, it wasn’t enough for some fans, with over a million of them signing a petition calling for season eight to be remade by ‘competent writers’.
Star Jacob Anderson, who played Grey Worm, said he felt it was a ‘shame’ that a portion of fans were so upset.
Game Of Thrones is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
