Character deaths are a dime a dozen on Game of Thrones — the show literally has a slogan of “all men must die”.

Even so, showrunner David Benioff has just revealed an off-screen death that’s truly shocking.

Ser Pounce.

That’s right, Tommen’s adorable cat is dead. The royal feline was last seen in season six, when Margaery (Natalie Dormer) visited Tommen (Dean Charles Chapman) in his bedroom for some late night flirting.

Rather grimly, that means every character in that scene has kicked the bucket, since Tommen threw himself out of a window and Margaery perished via Wildfire, both in the season six finale.

Although he only appeared in one scene, the adorably named cat quickly became a fan favourite character, spawning lots of online chatter and even joking posts about how he’ll be the one to take the Iron Throne, in the end.

But apparently not. Cause of death for Ser Pounce? Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

“Cersei hated the name ‘Ser Pounce’ so much she could not allow him to survive,” showrunner David Benioff told EW .

“So she came up with her most diabolic (execution). Ser Pounce’s death was so horrible we couldn’t even put it on the air.”

The eighth and final season premieres in Australia on April 15 on HBO.
