Game Of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss have finally broken their silence on the infamous coffee cup scene in the show’s season eight episode, The Last Of The Starks.
A particular scene in the fourth episode of the HBO series’ final season in which a coffee cup had been left in shot had divided viewers, and now the series’ creators have joked that when it comes to Persian rugs, it is ‘tradition’ to ‘make a mistake’.
Speaking to Japan’s Star Channel, David said: ‘I think in Persian rugs it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when making the rug, because only God can do anything perfect, so for us I guess that just was our mistake.’
‘That’s why I put the coffee cup there,’ Dan (DB) replied.
‘Conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection.’
David later went on to reveal the real reason why the cup was left there: the crew was so focused on Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) that they completely forgot it was there.
He also admitted that at first it was an ‘embarrassment’, but then he later found it ‘funny’ that this had happened.
‘So, at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was embarrassment; “how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?”‘ he revealed.
‘And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now.’
DB also admitted that it was ‘surprising’ to hear the show’s final season had received 32 Emmy nominations at the 71st ceremony, despite the fact that the season had received a mixed response from critics and fans.
‘It was kind of surprising? At least in my mind, I thought that the previous season would have been the peak and that we would’ve ended up with maybe a couple less, at best,’ he admitted.
He added: ‘I felt very happy for all of our team of people, all of the actors and all of the crew who got recognised. Each made us feel really proud of them and happy for them, because we know first-hand how hard they worked; we saw it every day for many years.’
Seasons 1-8 of Game Of Thrones are available to stream on NOW TV.
