Fans have a lot of questions about Game of Thrones Season 8, and now that the final season is out on DVD and Blu-ray, some answers are coming out. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss may not have been forthcoming with answers in the weeks after the series, but the duo have been more candid about some of the show’s Season 8 scenes in commentary tracks. This means there are now answers behind the coffee cup drama, and even what happened to Daenerys’ body once Drogon flew off with it.
There have been theories what the dragon (who isn’t technically a dragon) did with his former master, but the showrunners denied those and assured actress Emilia Clarke that Dany’s body was treated with reverence. That means no weird stuff, or at least nothing weirder than a pet taking their master away gingerly after they were murdered in cold blood.
From there, Drogon flew Dany’s corpse to Volantis. That much was noted by Samwell Tarly in “The Iron Throne” though it’s unclear what plans Drogon had after that. Perhaps the dragon has a nest in the area and will keep the body there while continuing to do dragon things? Let’s remember this is a world where magical resurrections aren’t entirely rare, so perhaps the dragon knew of a way he could save Dany. (Like this one.)
Ultimately, it feels inconsequential whatever became of Drogon and Daenerys in Game of Thrones. George R.R. Martin and HBO don’t have any plans for a direct sequel to the series, so any character living or dead’s fate following the conclusion of the series feels meaningless. Of course, it’s always good to have these little details, just in case someone changes their mind on what to do with this franchise down the road and gets the old gang back together for a sequel series.
One can never know what details are and aren’t significant when building a franchise, so it’s always best to tie up loose ends. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did just that in the commentary track (via EW), and perhaps established what dragons do when their master dies. That’s the handy kind of lore that could be used for the upcoming Targaryen-centric spinoff House of the Dragon, or something further expanded on whenever George R.R. Martin decides to finish the book series.
