This is been a buzz around the internet for years about likely shows in the GAME OF THRONES milieu. Out of all of those titles, only one came to the screen, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, and now another is promised to be on the way; that being THE HEDGE KNIGHT. The dozens of other titles, including the Jon Snow one, were never likely just because of one simple fact It would be too expensive to handle multiple GOT shows, but not if some of them were cheaper; not if some of them were animaterd tales.
Straight from GRR Martin comes word –
“HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them. When this last round of development started a few years back, we had four ideas for animated shows, with some great talents attached. Writers rooms and summits, outline and scripts followed in due course…but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved. Work on the other two animated projects continues apace, however…and meanwhile, we have moved NINE VOYAGES, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation. A move I support fully. Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on.There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.”
Martin is always careful of dropping news that he is not allowed to spill out but if we remember correctly THE GOLDEN EMPIRE, a tale about the region of Yi Ti is one of those projected animated works. It is a region in the continent of Essos, near the south-eastern limits of the known world. That society is considered one of the oldest and most advanced societies in creator George R.R. Martin’s sprawling fantasy realm and is inspired by Imperial China. Also, note that the NINE VOYAGES title is also referred to as THE SEA SNAKE. The series is a prequel to the HOUSE OF THE DRAGON and will follow Corlys Velaryon (played by Steve Toussaint in the current series) as he embarks on those seafaring ventures of his.
Exactly which animation houses are doing the projects is unknown. But again, going animated is a way to get what would be expensive live-action stories otherwise told and that’s what counts, right fans?
