George RR Martin has confirmed that one of the Game of Thrones spin-offs has been scrapped.

The epic franchise, which is set to spawn several more shows once the HBO epic reaches its finale next year, with HBO securing a pilot from Jane Goldman which is a prequel.

The series is set during the Age of Heroes, which would be thousands of years before Jon Snow’s name is ever whispered.

However, they didn’t stop there, in fact there was up to five different spin-offs in the works with HBO.

Now in a new blog post, author George RR Martin has revealed that the extended universe is being capped – slightly.

He wrote: ‘As for the other successor shows, if you have been following along, you know that we started with four, and eventually went to five. One of those has been shelved, I am given to understand, and of course Jane’s pilot is now moving to film. But that does not mean the others are dead.’

It is unclear at this point what the crux of the shelved show would have been.

The Hollywood Reporter have reported that HBO insisted that ‘no decisions have been made’ about the spin-offs.

Other writers said to have been brought onboard to extended the Game of Thrones franchise are Westworld’s Carly Wray, GoT’s Bryan Cogman, Brian Helgeland and Max Borenstein.

Martin, the mastermind behind the captivating Game of Thrones books, has previously said that three out of four prequels would be ‘set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development.’

‘Everything I am told indicates that we could film at least one more pilot, and maybe more than one, in the years to come. We do have an entire world and tens of thousands of years of history to play with, after all. But this is television, so nothing is certain,’ he said.

Goldman’s GoT prequel is still without an official title, but he’s given his views on what he would want it to be called, but reckon that marketing will get in the way.

‘My vote would be The Long Night, which says it all, but I’d be surprised if that’s where we end up. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase “game of thrones” in there somewhere,’ he said.
