There’s an awful lot that the Game of Thrones showrunners don’t want us to find out before the grand premiere of season eight next year – but that’s not to say that they won’t enjoy dangling plot details over our heads for the time being.
So here’s something to contemplate over the next few months: Jon Snow is set to return to Winterfell with Daenerys Targaryen during the season premiere.
In a new preview feature with Entertainment Weekly, details about the set-up of the opening episode of season eight have emerged – and here they are, in all their glory (so, yeah, spoiler alert).
Season eight will open at Winterfell with an episode which deliberately harks back to the set-up of the 2011 Game of Thrones pilot.
‘Instead of King Robert’s procession arriving, it’s Daenerys and her army,’ the EW report reveals about the key difference between the events of the pilot and the upcoming season premiere.
‘What follows is a thrilling and tense intermingling of characters – some of whom have never previously met, many who have messy histories – as they all prepare to face the inevitable invasion of the Army of the Dead.’
But what of Jon Snow’s connection to all of this?
Well, while not confirmed by EW, one of those ‘tense interminglings’ at Winterfell could be between Bran Stark and Jon, with the former no doubt keen to disclose the information he gleaned about the latter’s ancestry.
That vital piece of info about Jon’s ancestry proves that he is actually a legitimate heir to the Iron Throne – with his now-exposed family tree revealing that he is also Daenerys’ nephew (which is, er, a bit problematic).
Co-executive producer Bryan Cogman says of this newly-revealed synopsis: ‘It’s about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death.
‘It’s an incredibly emotional, haunting, bittersweet final season, and I think it honours very much what George [RR Martin] set out to do — which is flipping this kind of story on its head.’
The suspense is truly killing us.
