Game of Thrones spoilers discussion! Will Season 8 Be Different? HBO Doing Multiple Endings? Being the final season, it would be great if they figured out a way to prevent the spoilers or leaks to get out there. They have said they will be taking care with that, but they’ve said that before. In this video, I go over all of that and also talk about why Game of Thrones may have created a spoiler culture that is super hard to navigate. I also talk about why it’s weird for people who do YouTube to be involved with spoilers.

I have mixed feelings on this. I do think that a youtuber/content provider needs to be clear and upfront what kind of person they are and actually think about the repercussions of their actions if they choose to look at/present different types of spoilers. I think the idea of journalistic standard gets lost in the shuffle now days because anyone can pick up a phone and be a youtuber. I am reminded of the story you told about your interaction at Star Wars Celebration this year when you were talking with someone and you realized they were a Star Wars "Insider" (we'll use that term) and they became uncomfortable when they realized you were a journalist. Ethically, it would have been inappropriate to reveal that information and it was good you did not. Now the reddit information you mention in this video? I think it is more of a gray area. It is up to the individual person and what kind of channel they want to be.
On the flip side as someone who participates in viewing/commenting, I'm in the middle. Most of the time, I don't mind spoilers. I find them fun. Most of the time, they are not exactly right. Because I don't have cable, sometimes I have to wait a long time for shows I like and I get antsy and will just read what happens on Wikipedia so I can see how it ends. But it is a synopsis. The actual show is so much richer.
But… when it came to The Force Awakens, I didn't do any youtube videos. Stayed away from forums, etc. I did minimal internet stuff once it started opening wednesday night until I could see it Saturday morning. It was such a unique, once in a lifetime event and set of circumstances, I wanted to go in completely blind. But now we have the first chunk of next tale. Now I don't care. I want to hear (maybe not all) but a lot of the spoilers. I am learning who is an asshat and has no respect for others and don't subscribe to them or watch their videos.
And in the end, does it really matter if there are spoilers? Will those spoilers keep anyone away? Look at the leaked episodes of GOT this year. People still wanted to watch the show. I'm not saying a studio/director/writer shouldn't take the means necessary to protect the material. But they should really look at it more as protecting people who don't want to know anything going into the viewing versus look at it as if people know spoilers so revenue will be bad. If you are so concerned folks won't come to you movie/show because it leaked/spoilers, you don't have a spoiler problem, you have a story problem. It's shit. Spoilers or no, your show would have tanked.

I agree completely with you, speculation is good, spoilers suck. And, btw, Rhaegar is killed by Robert at the Trident 🙂
