Game of Thrones has long drawn complaints for its shocking and brutal scenes, with everything from child murder, to incest and rape. But as the finale has wrapped filming, its star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, has admitted that there were points of the show he couldn’t stomach.
The actor, who plays Jaime Lannister in the hit HBO show, has admitted that there were two stand out points in the drama that he couldn’t bring himself to watch them.
Reflecting on the past seven seasons ahead of the finale season next year, Coster-Waldau said: ‘I think there [were] shocking moments, and that’s what the show’s been good at. It’s such a fine balance where it’s, “Is the shock too big?”
‘For me there’s two moments that stand out – Shireen being burned at the stake I thought was just cruel. I mean it made sense story-wise and I understand why they did it. But I just couldn’t watch it and it was difficult to even read it.’
The Danish star, 47, also found the scenes with Robin Arryn being breastfed at the age of seven was ‘disturbing’.
‘It was so weird and wrong on every level,’ he told the publication.
But, the Gods of Egypt star felt that it was all justified and driven by the ‘story’.
Even though he’s shot his final scenes for his character, Coster-Waldau admitted that he’s still invested in the show.
‘I don’t think it’ll ever be gone from my life. I’m going back to Belfast next week,’ he said.
‘I’m not 100% done, but I’ve shot the last scene with me.’
Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in 2019.
