Game Of Thrones star Carice van Houten – who played Red Priestess Melisandre – has shared her thoughts on the fans who slammed the finale of the divisive HBO show, dubbing them ‘ungrateful’.
The actress, who brought us the brilliant line of ‘the night is dark and full of terrors’, spoke on the anniversary of the last episode of the fantasy hit, which saw fans up in arms at the perceived robbery of a final plot.
In it, we see Jon Snow (Kit Harington) banished yet again, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) killed (by old mate Jon), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) made Queen of the North, Arya (Maisie Williams) heading west to see what she can see, and Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) sitting on the iron throne.
Honestly, though, while, sure, it might have been a little short of the grand finale some fans had in their minds, you’d think someone had resurrected Ned Stark only to behead him again.
The vitriol was real.
And Carice really isn’t a fan of it.
Speaking to Insider, she said this week: ‘The fact that some people were so disappointed is because everything before that was so good.
‘So it feels a bit ungrateful. You’ve had such great times and then yeah, you’re going to be disappointed because it’s not going to go exactly how you anticipated.
‘Of course, you’re going to have all sorts of criticisms and I just thought it was a sign of how good the show was.’
When it comes to the ending, which saw that Three-Eyed Raven boss Bran crowned the ultimate ruler, Carice loved the plucky nature of showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff going for such a rogue leader.
She added: ‘I loved the randomness and clumsiness of picking some guy, which is very representative of the world right now, as crazy people are ruling the world.
‘I thought it was a great comparison.’
Carice is hardly the first GOT star to defend the show’s ending, after Emilia Clarke went in to bat for the series.
While Carice said it ‘amazes her’ that ‘people can go behind their computer and just type “die b—- die”’, in regards to voicing their personal feelings about the finale, she said the infamous petition to have the finale redone didn’t phase her.
As if you thought Melisandre would ever be shaken by a petition, pah!
